Raen: ah, the Oni... japanese beast in origin, first translated to english as Wardens of Ju-On(hell), charged with eternally punishing souls. also supposedly sake conneseurs, occasionally ressurecting souls into immortality in return for tributes of fine sake.
Raen: actually, as a result of the patriarchal social structure, it was thought unusual for a spirit of womanly stature to be powerful. as such, most major gods or demons excluding Amaterasu and Inmaryojin (sun goddess and fox goddess) all are portrayed in traditional art as male. the concept is fair game since in stories and legends it rarely specifies gender unless the entity is referred to as an individual (by name).
