Feran: Candles? Well, they're made out of wax or a similar surrogate (e.g. paraffin) which melts easily when heated. The wick then absorbs the material until it's saturated, through which it's able to ignite. Keep in mind that the burning part is not actually the wick but the liquid wax inside the wick, and as the wax level lowers, the upper, now dry, part of the wick, will burn down as well.
